The University of Houston GENBANK-SERVER is back up after being taken down for updating. The server now contains the sequences from the GenBank 59 release (*). Also added to the server is the "accession" command. If you know the accession number of a sequence, you can simply send the command send accession M11559 to get the sequence. The server works best if you put your request in the "Subject:" line. For mailers which do not permit this, the parsing of the message body should continue to work. The server can be contacted by BITNET, Internet, and UUCP mail at: genbank-server@uhnix2.uh.edu (Internet) genbank-server@uhnix2.UUCP (UUCP, new style) genbank-server%uhnix2.uh.edu@CUNYVM (Bitnet) (**) For information send the line Subject: help to the above addresses. Upcoming additions to the server include the full tape format files (see (*), below) and the automatic addition of entries submitted to GenBank as soon as they are added there. This should reduce the delay even further on new sequences, including just-published sequences. Enhanced network access will also be added. dan davison dd@lanl.gov, davison@uh.edu (Internet); DAVISON@UHOU (BITNET) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- (*) the format of the files on this server contain some additional linetypes usually removed for the tape distribution copy. Future updates of the server will contain the tape distribution format files. (**) Bitnet access is chancy; your mailer must write the appropriate mail header fields correctly. If you are on an IBM machine it is possible that the mailer will not do this properly. There have been 167 successful requests from BITNET, including Taiwan and Finland.
