USENET is a communications network between UNIX-based computer systems and features scores of topics on computers, science, cultural, and "off-the-wall" subjects. Such systems can run software such as readnews, rn or vnews which I believe are in the public domain and are used for reading and posting news items. The recently announced ANU-NEWS software is a public domain package available for VAX VMS systems which allows these systems to also obtain USENET news. We have version 5.7 of this software available for anonymous FTP from net.bio.net and will put up version 5.8 as soon as it becomes available (very soon). On BIONET users will have full access to USENET when we switch to the new Sun computer system. On other systems, users will have to lobby their systems staff to obtain and install newsreading software and obtain a "news feed" from some other participating USENET site.
