<> It will be no problem to upgrade existing hardware to use the chip. A special version that is pin for pin compatible is supposed to be made. The software might be a problem. For instance, in what mode does the chip come up? (6502 or 65816)? If it comes up in 65816, you will need to modify your boot rom or something to set it to 6502 mode. But is it necessary? What is the difference between the 65816 executing the base set of 6502 instructions (also 65C02 extended) if they still use the same opcodes? Tim

From: Brian Beattie <beattie@MITRE-GATEWAY.ARPA> Back in Nov last year there was some noise about a 16-bit version of the 6502. Has any-one heard anything more about it?? Thanx beattie @ mitre-gateway

Yes, there is now a 16-bit 6502, I have one on order, and expect it soon. You can get them in sample quantity from Western Design in Arizona... for $95 each... I will let the bboards know as soon as I get this chip in.. I also ordered the ORCA/M assembler and extension package that Western Design offers as a way to do programing on the APPLE...
