[bionet.general] ELF magnetic fields - help please

jmt@apple.com (Michael Tindell) (06/26/89)

I would appreciate some information on the biological effects of
extremely low frequency magnetic fields emanating from power
transmission lines.

My current residence is located near two 115 kV transmission
line towers. The distance from our bedroom to the nearest of
the 6 lines on one of the towers is approximately 50 feet; the
nearest line from the other tower is approx. 130 feet away.

My girlfriend and I were hesitant to move in to this apartment
because of the proximity of these lines. We also noticed an
abrupt disruption in our sleeping patterns upon moving in
(awakening at 3 a.m., unable to sleep for an hour or two,
then falling into deep sleep; an average of two nights a week),
wondered whether this might be related to the towers, but
decided it was probably acclimation. This disruption has
persisted for the two years we have lived there.

About nine months ago, my girlfriend developed bladder pain
and assumed she had an infection, though she had not had one
during the preceding five years. Her previous infection had
responded to antibiotics. This time the physician she saw
was unable to diagnose an infection. He proceded to try a
variety of treatments (chloropactin rinse, DMSO irrigation)
to no avail. Six months ago she began having irregular
menstrual cycles (two periods per month) for the first time
in her experience; no discernable cause. For the last 8 or 9
months we both have had chronic, mild swelling the lymph
glands on either side of the throat; did not seem worth medical
attention.

Should we flee the scene or am I being paranoid? Could any
of these problems be related to ELF fields? What is the
latest concensous. Please advise.

Thank You
