[bionet.general] IMPORTANT notice -- IO mail gateway shutdown

lncompton@AMES.ARC.NASA.GOV (Lilly Compton) (09/20/89)

	***************************************************
************************** IMPORTANT ********************************
**************************  NOTICE!  ********************************
	***************************************************

You are on this list because you mail has passed through the defunct
IO system from your account. This is to let you know that IO will
be shut down permanently on Wednesday, Sept 20 1989. At that time
mail routed through IO will be lost.

The IO mail gateway has been replaced with a newer, more efficient
gateway called AMES. Use this guide to reformat your mail addresses.

Mail sent from DECnet to Internet would change from:

	IO::"user@host.domain"
to:
	AMES::"user@host.domain"			(See Note 3)

e.g.	AMES::"joe@nsipo.arc.nasa.gov"

Mail sent from the Internet to SPAN (DECnet) would change from:

	user%host.span@io.arc.nasa.gov
to:
	user@host.span.nasa.gov				(See Note 2)

e.g.	smith@kryos.span.nasa.gov

SPECIAL NOTES:

2. MX RECORD SUPPORT:

	The following two addresses are the same. The first address is
	the preferred choice.

		jerry@host.span.nasa.gov
		jerry%host.span@ames.arc.nasa.gov

	Mail received from "ames" will be in the first format. An Internet
	host can send mail to or reply to mail from the first address if its
	mailer supports MX records (most modern mailers do).

	If your mailer does not support MX records, and you have to reply to
	an address like:

				user@host.span.nasa.gov
	change the address to:
				user%host.span@ames.arc.nasa.gov
	or:
				user%host.span@ames.ARPA

	Be sure to use the ".span" in your address. This was optional
	in the old mailer, but is required with the new mailer.

	Mail from a SPAN host at Ames Research Center will have the format:

				user@host.arc.nasa.gov

	If your mailer does not support MX records, reply to it with the
	address:
				user%host@ames.arc.nasa.gov

3. IF YOUR MAILER DOESN'T HAVE AN ADDRESS FOR AMES

	For DECnet users, if your host doesn't know the host "ames", use its
	numeric address 24810.

If you have any questions, please contact me immediately.
