WORKSHOP ON COMPUTATIONAL ISSUES IN THE LIFE SCIENCES

The University of Texas System Center for High Performance Computing
will be holding its first Workshop on Computational Issues in the Life Sciences
May 24-25, 1990, in the Commons Building, Balcones Research Center, Austin,
Texas. The goal of this conference is to provide life scientists with a
broader understanding of how computation, particularly high-performance
computation, is used in the analysis of problems arising in the life sciences
and medicine.

Invited speakers who have already confirmed are from GenBank, the National
Science Foundation, Sun Microsystems, Intelligenetics, and Cray Research.
Speakers may also come from Silicon Graphics and Stardent. Formal demon-
strations of various software packages will be given the first evening from
6:30 to 9:00 p.m. In addition, there will be poster and contributed paper
sessions available.

This workshop is open to everyone, with or without computer experience,
who is interested in the use of computers in the life sciences and medicine;
however, space is limited and will be assigned on a first come, first serve
basis. There is no registration fee. Please let us know as soon as possible
if you think you might wish to give a 15 minute paper so that we might reserve
the time. You may contact us by email, U. S. mail, FAX, or by calling one of
the numbers listed below. Additional materials and information will be mailed
to everyone who expresses interest in attending.

CONFERENCE INFORMATION: The goal of this conference is to
provide life scientists with a broader understanding of how
computation, particularly high-performance computation, is
currently being used to assist in the analysis of complex
problems arising in the life sciences and medicine.

The workshop is open to anyone, with or without computer
experience, who is interested in the use of computers and
their application to research and development problems
arising in biological/medical/dental/allied health sciences.

No prerequisite knowledge will be assumed, and all who are
interested are encouraged to attend; however, space is limited
and will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.

CONFIRMED LECTURERS: The following individuals are confirmed
as lecturers

o Dr. John Wooley, Director, BBS Directorate, National Science
                   Foundation
o Dr. Paul Gilna, GenBank Project Leader, Los Alamos National
                   Laboratories
