PROTEIN SEQUENCE ENTRIES NOW AVAILABLE VIA E-MAIL

The University of Houston Department of Biochemical and Biophysical
Sciences, Institute for Molecular Biology, and the University
Computing Center are pleased to make Protein Information Resource
(PIR, also known as NBRF) protein sequence entries available via
electronic mail. The PIR is added to the other capabilities of the UH
Genbank(tm)-server.

The server can be reached as
	genbank-server@bchs.uh.edu (NSFNet)
	genbank-server%bchs.uh.edu@CUNYVM (BITNET/EARN/NETNORTH)
(See the note at the bottom of this message if you are trying to access
the server from a IBM VM system VM/CMS, VM/TSO, etc.)

Commands:

SEND PIR-HELP
The introductory message for the PIR file access; includes
	top-level index.

SEND PIR-INDEX index-name
Send the specific index of PIR entries

SEND PIR-ENTRY name1 name2 name3 name4
Send the PIR entries named "name1", "name2", etc.

The names of the entries can be obtained from the index file
        (SEND PIR-INDEX index-name). Both the PROTEIN.DAT sequences
and the NEW.DAT sequences are available, but none of the other
        files.

SEND PIR-RELEASE
Send the release notes for the PROTEIN.DAT and NEW.DAT files.
*****THE PIR REQUESTS THAT EACH USER RETRIEVE THIS FILE.*****

NOTE: If you are on a VM system, your mailer must know the "MX"
protocol to reach this address, and your mailer must have the "lnames"
facility. If either of these are not present, we regret that you will
not be able to contact the UH server. Ask your system administrator
to upgrade your communications software; she or he can contact one of
us for information if needed.

We would like to extend special thanks to Alan Pfeiffer-Traum of the
UCC for making most of this possible.
