SUMMARY OF THE SERVICES AVAILABLE FROM THE UH SERVER
This note briefly summarizes the data and programs available from the
UH Genbank-server
The address of the server is
genbank-server@bchs.uh.edu (NSFNet)
genbank-server%bchs.uh.edu@CUNYVM (BITNET/EARN/NETNORTH etc.)
1) GenBank(tm) sequences
Start by getting the HELP file from the server
SEND HELP
Index files are retrieved by
SEND INDEX index-file-name
Entries are retrieved by
SEND LOCUS locus-name locus-name2 locus-name3...
and by
SEND ACCESSION accession-1 accession-2 accession3...
2) PIR (Protein Information Resource) protein sequences
Start by getting the help file which includes the top-level index
SEND PIR-HELP
and then a specific index file:
SEND PIR-INDEX protein.dat-c
Individual entries are retrieved with
SEND PIR-ENTRY sequence-name sequence-name2 sequence-name3...
Release notes can be obtained with
SEND PIR-RELEASE
3) Search the protein database via e-mail:
A help file is available from
SEND PIR-SEARCH HELP
And searches can be performed by sending a properly
formatted sequence to
pir-search@bchs.uh.edu (NSFNet)
pir-search%bchs.uh.edu (BITNET/NETNORTH/EARN....)
Users on IBM mainframe or mainframe clone systems see the
note below.
4) Molecular biology software
Start by getting an overview:
HELP SOFTWARE
Specific indices can be retrieved with one or more of:
SEND MAC INDEX
SEND DOS INDEX
SEND VMS INDEX
SEND UNIX INDEX
Specific software can be retrieved with:
SEND MAC name1 name2 name3 name4...
SEND DOS name1 name2 name3 name4...
SEND VMS name1 name2 name3 name4...
5) Matrix of Biological Knowledge Project information
Start with
SEND MATRIX HELP
and
SEND MATRIX INDEX
6) Molecular-evolution bboard archives:
Start with
SEND MOLEVOL HELP
and
SEND MOLEVOL INDEX
7) The Richard Roberts Restriction enzyme data and reference files:
SEND RENZDATA
SEND RENZREFS
8) The software and PIR database is available via anonymous
FTP to lavaca.uh.edu [129.7.1.19], in the directory genbank-server.
We will try, but may very well not be able to respond to every
request for help; this is a completely volunteer effort.
Questions about the server should be directed to:
genbank-server-management@bchs.uh.edu (NFSNet)
or
genbank-server-management%bchs.uh.edu@CUNYVM (BITNET, etc.)
By popular demand, "genbank-server-managment" also works.
