The following tables have been compiled from a database of genetic
and other information concerning the genetic loci of Drosophila
melanogaster. Five tables are included in this release. GENETIC LOCI
is a list of the genes of D. melanogastersorted alphabetically;
GENETIC MAP is a genetic map of D. melanogastersorted by genetic map
position; GENETIC FUNCTION is a list of loci sorted by the
"function" of the gene's product; SYNONYMS is a list of synonyms
with their "valid" gene symbols. REFERENCES is a table of references
to these data.
These maps are to be considered as a first draft, they will not be
free of errors. I very much welcome being told of errors of fact or
ommission.
In the longer term it is to be hoped that these tables will be used
in the construction of an integrated Drosophiladatabase. There are
two immediate plans for expanding these tables. One is to include
protein data bank AC numbers, the other to include analogous
(?homologous) genes from non-drosophilid organisms. The reference
table should be expanded to include full references, and the aim
will be to include all references to a particular gene (or, perhaps,
all those not included in the final version of Lindsley and Zimm).
OBTAINING UPDATES
These files are available from the archive fileserver at the
Department of Biology, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana
(IUBIO.BIO.INDIANA.EDU; 129.79.1.101). They can be obtained as
Postscript documents (i.e. in a form suitable for printing with a
laserwriter, these files are all file.PS) or as text documents (as
file.TEXT) by using FTP (File Transfer Protocol).
The files are in the directory [ARCHIVE.FLY.LOCI] with the following
names:
Text files:
MAINDOC.TEXT [this document]
LOCIDOC.TEXT
LOCI.TEXT
MAPDOC.TEXT
MAP.TEXT
SYNONYMSDOC.TEXT
SYNONYMS.TEXT
FUNCTIONDOC.TEXT

To obtain any of these files use the following commands:
>ftp iubio.bio.indiana.edu
ftp> user: anonymous
ftp> password: guest
ftp> cd [archive.fly.loci]
ftp> get DOC.PS
ftp> get LOCI.PS
... et cetera
... or
ftp> mget *.text (to retrieve all TEXT files)
... or
ftp> mget. *.PS (to retrieve all POSTSCIPT files)
ftp> bye
It is hoped that these files will also be available from
NETSERV@EMBL.BITNET. These files will be kept updated on these
computers. The version number and date of the database will be
indicated in the main document (MAINDOC.PS and MAINDOC.TEXT). In the
future I also hope to make available a database of aberration
breakpoints.

Michael Ashburner's Drosophila Genetic Map Database is now also available from the EMBL File Server for downloading using standard electronic mail. There are two versions of each database file, plain text and PostScript. You will find these files in the directory DROSOPHILA. For more information send a mail message to NETSERV@EMBL.BITNET and include the lines HELP DROSOPHILA DIR DROSOPHILA I'd like to thank Don Gilbert, who kindly provided us with the database files. Michael Ashburner tried to send them directly to EMBL, but as some of you may have already noticed, the JANET/EARN gateway does nasty things even with simple mail files...
