[net.micro] Summary of opinions on Smith-Corona TP-1

peterr@utcsrgv.UUCP (Peter Rowley) (05/27/84)

I received about 5 replies to my query about the SCM TP-1. All but one
reply was positive, but all cautioned not to overestimate the unit.

People agreed it produces good looking output, but one complained that
as it only takes 88 character print wheels, it can't handle the ASCII
< > { } ~ ` ^ | \ characters. It has flow control, but not XON/XOFF,
only via the RS232 DTR pin. It makes a lot of noise and is fairly slow.
It is mostly only suitable for single-sheet printing.

Everyone thought it was reliable and very good for the money (as low as
US$210 with serial interface), except for one person who had trouble
with the paper advance mechanism (no word on whether SCM serviced it).
In fact, my impression from the messages is that people are very
impressed with its price/performance... as one as long doesn't expect
too much, it is a real bargain.

In case you're interested, I decided not to buy one, but rather to buy
a faster modem, so I could use a printer on the VAX I use. More than
one way to solve a problem...

Thanks very much to all who replied.
