[net.micro] Q: Squeaky floppy drive

phil@amd70.UUCP (Phil Ngai) (05/11/84)

On a single sided drive, the pad can get worn and squeak. Replacing
the pad will eliminate the noise. They are not easy to get as far
as I can tell.

What would cause the head of a 5 1/4" floppy drive (Tandon 100-2)
to squeak (like the disc brakes on many cars) when the head is
seeking? This occurs intermittently, usually on long seeks, seems
independent of the disk. The same disks work fine on another
    drive. Any remedies?

Re: Shugart disk drive lubrication

I recently received some valuable info re lubrication of
Shugart 8" drives, prompted by intermittant squeaking from
a drive! Carefully, spray a small amount of aerosol sili-
cone lubricant on the lead screw (without getting it all
over the place!) I was amazed at the noise reduction I saw
immediately. According to my source, Shugart has done this
themselves in spite of no mention in service manuals. It
certainly hasn't hurt my drive operation. Don't use a
lubricant with any petroleum base... pure silicone (food
grade) only! The brand I have is called Sprayway, from
Sprayway, Inc., Addison, Ill 60101.

NO NO NO NO NO NO!!! Don't ever spray anything on the lead screw
of a Shugart SA800. It WILL pick up dust and start to bind. The proper
way of fixing the noise is to adjust the lead screw tension, and altough
this means removing the lead screw, it is not difficult. You just have to
re-align the drive when your done. Be careful not to loosen the stepper
motor mounting plate or you'll upset the head penetration. As for
lubricating the lead screw, first clean it with alcohol, and then if you must
spray a clean cloth with silicon spray and WIPE it on the screw. Leave a
film so thin you're not even sure it's there, otherwise it will collect dust
and bind up.

You can also do this to the guide rails for the head on the Tandon 5 1/4.
The rails are what cause the squeek.

All the "tuner cleaner" sprays I have tried leave a film that indeed
collects dust and dirt and makes the component fail again a few weeks
later. Recently I got (from a friend) a can of flourocarbon-based
residue-free stuff. It really does the job on noisy potentiometers,
and does *not* seem to leave a residue (though the can clearly states
that it **will** mess up the ozone layer! Really!). One might try
using some of this stuff on a critical application like a disk drive
lead screw. Note - I have *not* as yet tried it in this application!
Send me mail if you want me to lookup the brand name of the stuff.
