ANNOUNCING: CHROMOSOME-22 BULLETIN BOARD
This announcement consists of
1. CHARTER
2. DISCUSSION OF CHARTER
3. HOW TO USE THE CHROMOSOME-22 BBOARD
4. FIRST POSTING
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. CHARTER
This is an electronic bulletin board dedicated to the dissemination
of information DIRECTLY relevant to scientists interested in mapping human
chromosome 22.
>>> What IS appropriate for posting on this bulletin board:
A. Announcements of the existence of biological reagents, such as
- somatic cell hybrids
- mapped markers
- defined polymorphisms
- chromosome specific libraries
- Sequence Tagged Sites for chromosome 22 (old or new)
B. Reports of mapping data, such as
- physical location of chromosome 22 markers with respect to
chromosome breakpoints,
- markers that share pulse field gel fragments,
- two-point and multi-point linkage data,
- in-situ hybridization data,
- radiation hybrids
C. Requests for specific mapping data, such as,
- physical location of markers with respect to chromosome
breakpoints,
- makers that share pulse field gel fragments,
- two-point and multi-point linkage data,
- in-situ hybridization data
- radiation hybrids
D. Announcements of workshops, meetings, publications, that would
be of SPECIFIC AND DIRECT use to chromosome 22 workers.
E. Announcements of work in progress that would be of interest and
use to members of the chromosome 22 mapping community.
>>> What is NOT appropriate for posting on the bulletin board:
A. Chit-chat.
B. Noise
C. Material that is of only general broad interest to workers in
genome mapping.
2. DISCUSSION OF CHARTER
>>> What IS appropriate for posting on this bulletin board:
A. Announcements of the existence of biological reagents, such as
- somatic cell hybrids
- mapped markers
- defined polymorphisms
- chromosome specific libraries
- Sequence Tagged Sites
Such announcements should be made with the clear understanding that these
reagents are readily and immediately available to the scientific community
and should include the relevant contact information (name, mailing address,
telephone, FAX, E-Mail address). STS data should include the sequence of
primers, PCR conditions, size of resultant PCR product.
B. Reports of mapping data, such as
- physical location of chromosome 22 markers with respect to
chromosome breakpoints,
- markers that share pulse field gel fragments,
- two-point and multi-point linkage data,
- in-situ hybridization data,
- radiation hybrids
These reports should be detailed and documented so that readers have
sufficient information to interpret the data. Posting the complete text
of a paper (either in preparation or in press) reporting such mapping data
would be very appropriate. We currently do not have readily available a
system for posting figures although technology may change.
C. Requests for specific mapping data, such as,
- physical location of markers with respect to chromosome
breakpoints,
- makers that share pulse field gel fragments,
- two-point and multi-point linkage data,
- in-situ hybridization data
- radiation hybrids
It would be very helpful to all workers in the field if one could send
out a request for information. For example, one such posting could read
> "Does anyone have any information that would place D22S... telomeric
> or centromeric to D22S...?"
> "Are you aware of any cell lines or hybrids with defined breakpoints
> in chromosome 22?"
The response should include sufficient supporting data so that the requestor
can assess the validity of the data.
Such information DOES NOT take the place of peer-reviewed publication
or workshop-reviewed reports but is often very helpful to workers in the
field and could very well stimulate discussion, point up discrepancies, fill
in gaps, etc.
D. Announcements of workshops, meetings, publications, that would
be of SPECIFIC AND DIRECT use to chromosome 22 workers.
The chromosome 22 bulletin board should NOT take the place of other,
more general "genome-oriented" bulletin boards that are already chock full
of meeting announcements. Requests for information on chromosome 22
specific meetings, workshops, would also be appropriate.
E. Announcements of work in progress that would be of interest and
use to members of the chromosome 22 mapping community.
If someone is in the process of making a flow-sorted library, a
radiation hybrid panel, a YAC library, a cosmid library, etc., it would be
very appropriate to announce your intention and progress.
>>> What is NOT appropriate for posting on the bulletin board:
A. Chit-chat.
B. Noise
C. Material that is of only general broad interest to workers in
genome mapping.
For the bulletin board to be helpful to workers in the field, we want
the bulletin board to have a high signal-to-noise ratio and to be
complementary rather than duplicative of other existing bulletin boards.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. How to Use the CHROMOSOME-22 bulletin board
The CHROMOSOME-22 newsgroup can be received anywhere in the world via
USENET under the USENET name bionet.genome.chrom22. To do this you
need to have USENET news software running on your local computer and
have a news source or "feed." If you need assistance getting a USENET
news feed, please contact the Internet address biosci@genbank.bio.net.
For those who need to receive messages by regular electronic mail
instead of through USENET news software, there are four distribution
points for the CHROMOSOME-22 newsgroup depending upon your
geographical and network locations:
1.) If you reside in the Americas, to subscribe to the
CHROMOSOME-22 bulletin board, please send a message to the
Internet address
biosci@genbank.bio.net
This address also serves American BITNET users.
2.) If you use the European Academic Research Network (EARN) and
live in Continental Europe or Ireland, you can subscribe automatically
to the newsgroup by sending a message containing the line
SUBSCRIBE CHROM+22 your_personal_name
to the address
LISTSERV@IRLEARN
(for example, SUBSCRIBE CHROM+22 Chris Smith). The Subject line of
the message should be left blank.
3.) If you reside in the United Kingdom, please send your
subscription request to
biosci@uk.ac.daresbury
4.) If you reside in Scandinavia (or in Continental Europe and have
Internet access), please send your subscription to
biosci@bmc.uu.se
If you do not fall into any of the above categories, you may contact
whichever of the above sites is most convenient.
Posting Messages to the Bulletin Board
--------------------------------------
Once you have chosen your distribution point, you may post messages by
sending to the bulletin board address at that site. Note below the
shorter addresses used for BITNET/EARN/JANET sites.
Location Posting address
-------- ---------------
Americas / Internet format: chromosome-22@genbank.bio.net
Americas / BITNET format: chrom-22@genbank.bio.net
Ireland / EARN format: chrom-22@irlearn.ucd.ie
U.K. / JANET format: chrom-22@uk.ac.daresbury
Sweden / Internet format: chromosome-22@bmc.uu.se
Users of USENET news software, e.g., "postnews" may post messages on
their local computer to bionet.genome.chrom22 (be sure to set
distribution to "world" when prompted) and let the software handle
distribution details.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Initial Posting
1. A set of reference hybrids for the chromosome 22 has been banked at the
Mutant Cell Repository in Camden and is available to the community.
2. A call to the users:
Any relevant manuscripts have been recently submitted, published or
accepted regarding data of interest to the chromosome-22 community.
3. A YAC library from the GM 10888 hybrid is being constructed by Kurt
Fischbeck and Bob Nussbaum at the University of Pennsylvania. It is in the
initial stages of construction in pYAC4 in AB1380.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
4. We would like to post the e-mail addresses of all subscribers to the
chromosome-22 bulletin board so that all users know who the other users are.
In this way we can let other workers know who the b-board participants
actually are and how to contact them individually. One way to do this would
be for each bulletin board subscriber to post a brief paragraph concerning
their research interest in chromosome 22 and what their mailing and E-Mail
addresses are, spelled out since it is sometime difficult from distant nodes
to decipher just what the address should include.
For example:
In the Philadelphia area, a group of investigators at 5 local
institutions are involved in a proposed Human Genome Center dedicated to
mapping human chromosome 22 through construction of a complete physical and
genetic map of chromosome 22, including complete overlapping YAC and P1
contigs built around anchor markers.
