[bionet.general] News software

gilbertd@cricket.bio.indiana.edu (Don Gilbert) (02/15/91)

Just some 2 cents on the subject of newsreaders for VMS. I missed the
original post. We have ANU-NEWs (an old version) running on Iubio.
We get an NNTP feed{from a local Unix newsbox, and need to store only
bionet groups as read. The disk space used by this is about 5 megabytes
including ANU-NEWs software. I don't keep up with the current capabilities
of ANU-NEWS, but it likely can be configured to serve out news to other
vaxes (and personal computers?) via NNTP protocols. You can get some
more, somewhat old info on this via anonymous ftp to iubio.bio.indiana.edu,
cd [archive.util.vms.netnews], get 00news-help.text.

(note: the following only applies to VAX/VMS sites)

Just to prove that Indiana U. and Purdue U. never agree on anything :-) ...

We use the NEWSRDR nntp client news reading software to read news that
is stored on a UNIX computer. The software is very good, reliable, small,
fast, supported and, IMHO, much better than the ANU-NEWS software (which
I tried out a couple of years ago). NEWSRDR is available via anonymous
FTP from:

    vms.ecs.rpi.edu

While I'm at it, I also recommend the MX mailing software from the same
place. I like it a lot better the PMDF.

One of the advantages of USENET is that you can get up-to-date help on
a variety of computer and software issues. In regards to the ANU-NEWS
news reading software, the newsgroup news.software.anu-news provides
such a forum for assistance.

ANU-NEWS V6.0-2 is now available. It can be run as a newsreader only, which
makes it a very usefull to sites with small disks. There are also other news
programs available, but we are very pleased with ANU-NEWS. Note that old
(i.e. pre-V6.0) versions do not support the 'diskless' NNTP newsreader function
