I too have just received my April 1st letter about Gulf war effects on science from GCG. My e-mail response to GCG is about to be that assuming this is not a joke (as Europeans hope) a major protest will be launched. Regrettably we were invoiced for the next release of GCG last November so cannot easily vote with our feet if it is for real.

I still have grave doubts about whether or not this is a real threat, but I think that trying to stir up a controversy if none exists might be precisely the ***wrong*** strategy. Sincerely, Dave Kristofferson GenBank Manager kristoff@genbank.bio.net

Seems very strange that this letter was only received by folks in Europe and that the letter was dated April 1st. GCG is on the network but there has been no message explaining the letter. Did someone at GCG create a rather twisted April Fools joke? Or is someone trying to create a mass exodus of european GCG users, where were the letters postmarked?
