                EXPLORING GENOME INFORMATION:
An Introduction to Human Genetic Databases.

                    EMBL Practical Course
                      26-30 August 1991
                       Heidelberg, FRG

The EMBL Data Library and The William H. Welch Medical Library of The Johns
Hopkins University are offering an introduction to the use of major human
genetics databases. The main emphasis is the Genome Data Base.* GDB hands-on
training will be given by staff of the Welch Library. The course also covers
the related Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) and the Centre d'Etude du
Polymorphisme Humain (CEPH) databases as well as the German Cancer Research
Center (DKFZ) biocomputing service (sponsored by the EC Human Genome Analysis
Programme.) Guest lecturers will address selected topics in human genetics.
One session will be devoted to ethical issues. A report of the Human Gene
Mapping (HGM 11) workshop, which takes place a week before this course, is
planned. All participants are encouraged to contribute a poster paper and to
bring along a practical problem to work on.

The course is intended mainly for post-doctoral fellows and graduate students.
Applicants should send their CVs and a brief letter describing their current
work and the reasons for wishing to attend the course before 15 May. Enrollment
is limited to 20 students from EC/EMBL member states. Registration fee, room
and board is DM 400, and a limited number of scholarships are available.
