There have been no changes in the BIOSCI newsgroups information sheet
since last month. A copy will follow this message.

			     HOWEVER ...

After our recent usage survey, the BIOSCI managers decided to do a bit
of pruning of inactive newsgroups. The following changes will go into
effect on 31 October 1990 (Halloween 8-):

The following newsgroups will be closed due to lack of use:

BIO-CONVERSION (bionet.technology.conversion)
RESEARCH-NEWS (bionet.molbio.news)
BIOTECH (bionet.techology.general)
PIR (bionet.molbio.pir)
SWISS-PROT	(bionet.molbio.swiss-prot)

The last two newsgroups (PIR and SWISS-PROT) will have their mailing
addresses redirected to the PROTEIN-ANALYSIS newsgroup
(bionet.molbio.proteins) in the event that these older addressed are
used by anyone. The staff at both the PIR and SWISS-PROT data banks
have agreed to this change. BIOSCI users will still be able to post
messages about these data banks to the PROTEIN-ANALYSIS newsgroup.

If you have been a subscriber to either SWISS-PROT or PIR, but not to
PROTEIN-ANALYSIS, we urge you to request a subscription to the latter
newsgroup by sending your request to one of the following addresses
(NOT to this newsgroup, please!) depending upon your location:

Address Location	Network
------- --------	-------
biosci@irlearn.ucd.ie Ireland EARN/BITNET
biosci@uk.ac.daresbury U.K. JANET
biosci@bmc.uu.se Sweden Internet
biosci@genbank.bio.net U.S.A. Internet/BITNET

kristoff@GENBANK.BIO.NET (David Kristofferson) (01/01/91)

A new group for mapping and sequencing of Chromosome 22 has been added
to the BIOSCI list. The Internet, BITNET, and USENET names are
respectively:

CHROMOSOME-22 CHROM-22 bionet.genome.chrom22

We prefer that you receive BIOSCI newsgroups via USENET news software.
However if you require an e-mail subscription, please contact one of
the following addresses depending upon your location/network:

Address Location	Network
------- --------	-------
biosci@irlearn.ucd.ie Ireland EARN/BITNET
biosci@uk.ac.daresbury U.K. JANET
biosci@bmc.uu.se Sweden Internet

There were no changes to the BIOSCI newsgroup list this month.

kristoff@GENBANK.BIO.NET (David Kristofferson) (03/01/91)

The line describing the following newsgroup was changed from

CHROMOSOME-22 Mapping and Sequencing of Chromosome 22

to

CHROMOSOME-22 Mapping and Sequencing of Human Chromosome 22

There were no changes to the BIOSCI newsgroups themselves this month.

kristoff@GENBANK.BIO.NET (Dave Kristofferson) (04/12/91)

To simplify e-mail addressing, the BIOSCI BITNET names have now been
implemented at all four BIOSCI sites. There is no longer any need to
use Internet addresses at some sites and BITNET addresses at others.
The BIOSCI info sheet (in a subsequent posting) has been revised to
reflect this change. The Internet addresses are still functional at
both bmc.uu.se and genbank.bio.net but they will not be advertised in
the future. For example, whereas previously one posted to
bio-software@bmc.uu.se (Internet) and bio-soft@irlearn.ucd.ie
(BITNET), now one may use the bio-soft@xxx format at any of the four
sites.

Four new newsgroups have been added to the BIOSCI newsgroups:

Name: GENETIC-LINKAGE
Address: GEN-LINK
USENET: bionet.molbio.gene-linkage
Description: discussions about genetic linkage analysis

Name: ARABIDOPSIS
Address: ARAB-GEN
USENET: bionet.genome.arabidopsis
Description: information about the Arabidopsis genome project

Name: COMPUTATIONAL-BIOLOGY
Address: COMP-BIO
USENET: bionet.biology.computational
Description: computer and mathematical applications in biology

Name: NEUROSCIENCE
Address: NEUR-SCI
USENET: bionet.neuroscience
Description: research issues in the neurosciences

Note that the COMP-BIO newsgroup is moderated, i.e., postings to that
group are directed to the moderators (rather than directly to the
group itself) for later posting. The moderators are Phil Curtiss of the
University of Maryland (curtiss@umiacs.umd.edu) and Matthew Witten of
the Unversity of Texas (m.witten@cerberus.chpc.utexas.edu).

The NEUROSCIENCE newsgroup follows our usual format but James Olds at
NIH (olds@helix.nih.gov) will be the group discussion leader. His
task will be to stimulate use of the group.

The ARABIDOPSIS newsgroup is being transferred to BIOSCI from Michigan
State University where it was previously managed by Chris Somerville.
The list at MSU will be shut down shortly.

The GENETIC-LINKAGE newsgroup will be overseen by Steve Bryant of the
Imperial Cancer Research Fund in the U.K. This group is currently
open but may be changed to a moderated forum in the future.

Instructions on how to post to these newsgroups is provided in the
BIOSCI information sheet which follows in a later posting.
