This is not true with an AXE exchange. Call Waiting is there indicated by a short double beep. This does not seem to interfere with modems, which means that it will be hard to detect unless you have a loudspeaker and a keen ear. The only solutions seem to be either to disconnect Call Waiting during every session or, if that is not possible, to disconnect it permanently.
