[bionet.software.pc] Looking for info on Geographic Information Systems

lane@dalcs.UUCP (John Wright/Dr. Pat Lane) (02/20/88)

Hello.

We are looking for information and recommendations on Geographic Information
Systems for use in resource planning and management applications. A GIS
system (of the type we are interested in) would allow one to input geographic
maps and information pertaining to various areas and points on the map, to
manipulate them in various ways, and of course to output them on a plotter or
other graphics device. Of particular interest to us is the function of "map
compostion" where several maps are combined into one with areas and/or points
defined having various attributes based on data from the source maps and some
user-defined functions or criteria. We are *not* interested in the fancy
image-processing systems for satelite data, etc. or systems designed for
cartography (we're environmental planners).

We are looking for something that runs on fairly modest equipment (PC's AT's,
Macs, etc.) and does not require anything too outlandish in the graphics hard-
ware department. We are, however, looking for something fairly powerfull and
flexible in the map composition department. In particular, it should properly
handle both areas and point attributes as well as continuous and discrete
attributes.

Please E-mail any comments you have. We will be most grateful for any help
with this.

PS. Sorry if I have posted this to a group where I shouldn't have and I'd
like to know if I didn't post it where I should have. I wasn't too
     sure on this one.

Regards,
John Wright.
