                        JOB DESCRIPTION

                    GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT

               NUCLEOTIDE SEQUENCE DATABASE ANNOTATOR

DESCRIPTION: The graduate research assistant works with members of the
Theoretical Biology and Biophysics Group (T-10) engaged in expanding and
maintaining GenBank, a computer-based DNA sequence database. He/she extracts
information from the molecular biology literature, uses various intellectual
and computational tools to check it for consistency and accuracy, and enters
it into the database. There are opportunities to participate in the design
and development of new information-handling and analytical tools. This is
a 1-2 year position.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelors degree with an emphasis on biological sciences,
preferably biochemistry, genetics, or molecular biology; either some
background in or an interest and inclination toward computer data-processing;
either current graduate school enrollment or intent to pursue graduate or
medical education.

TRAINING OFFERED: Basic and advanced instruction in molecular biology,
particularly recombinant DNA science, which is needed and utilized at the
working level to competently extract required information from the literature;
computer and computer systems use, particularly database use and management.
The training should be very valuable to one who plans to go on to graduate
education in any of the rapidly expanding subfields of biology and medicine.
Previous appointees in this position have been highly successful in being
accepted into graduate or medical school while working with us.

                    GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT

           COMPUTER DATABASE SOFTWARE/HARDWARE SPECIALIST

DESCRIPTION: The graduate research assistant works with members of the
Theoretical Biology and Biophysics Group (T-10) engaged in designing,
developing, and maintaining several databases, including: GenBank, a
DNA sequence database; the Human Genome Information Resource, a
database covering both mapping and sequencing information; and LiMB, a
directory of molecular biology databases. He/she helps to develop
software, runs routine database-maintenance programs, provides support
for others in the group using database utilities, and helps provide
support for the hardware the group uses. There are also opportunities
to become familiar with the field of molecular biology. This is a 1-2
year position.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelors degree with an emphasis (or equivalent
experience) on computer science, including programming, systems
development and maintenance, or database management; either current
graduate school enrollment or intent to pursue graduate or professional
education. Experience with the UNIX operating system and the C
programming language would be useful, as would be an understanding of
(or interest in) molecular biology.

TRAINING OFFERED: Computer systems use, particularly development and
use of database-management utilities as well as experience with the
UNIX operating system in an environment based primarily on a Sun
workstation network but including personal-, micro-, mini-, and
mainframe computers; use of relational database management systems; use
of the C programming language; basic instruction in molecular biology,
particularly recombinant DNA science. The training should be very
valuable to one who plans to go on to graduate education in computer
science or, possibly, any of the rapidly expanding subfields of biology
and medicine.
