Title:
UNIX System Administrator
Summary:
Provide system administration services for a computer center
specializing in the development of software for molecular biology
research and support of local molecular biology researchers.
Your primary responsibility will be to oversee the computing
environment for the Molecular Biology Information Resource,
consisting mainly of a network of Sun workstations and file
servers.
Environment:
Baylor College of Medicine is located in Houston, Texas in the
Texas Medical Center, one of the world's largest medical centers.
Baylor is a leader in biomedical research and has a strong
commitment to develop information technology programs for the
support of ongoing research. The Molecular Biology Information
Resource (MBIR) is funded by a grant from the National Institutes
of Health to develop software in the area of the analysis of
gene and protein sequences. The MBIR distributes a major software
package for gene and protein sequence analysis and is committed
to developing software to support the international initiative
to map and sequence the human genome.
Job Description:
o UNIX administration
o System backup
o Crash recovery and file system repair
o Maintain modem, async and ethernet connections
o Networking support
o uucp/e-mail/usenet management
o System security
o Monitoring disk usage
o Software installation
o Preparation and verification of software distribution
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience
Shell and C programming ability, and 3 to 5 years experience
managing a UNIX system is necessary. Experience in developing
relational DBMS applications, object-oriented programming or
graphics is desirable.
