Title:

      Molecular Biology Computer Consultant

Summary:

      Tired of running sequencing gels?  Use your experience in
      molecular biology research and interest in computers to be a key
      interface between a community of biomedical researchers and a
      computer center specializing in computer support for molecular
      biology research.

Environment:

      Baylor College of Medicine is located in the Texas Medical Center
      (Houston, TX), one of the world's largest medical centers.
      Baylor is a leader in biomedical research and has a strong
      commitment to develop information technology programs for the
      support of ongoing research.  The Molecular Biology Information
      Resource (MBIR) is funded by a grant from the National Institutes
      of Health to develop software in the area of the analysis of gene
      and protein sequences.  The MBIR distributes a major software
      package for gene and protein sequence analysis and is committed
      to developing software to support the international initiative to
      map and sequence the human and other large genomes.  The MBIR
      also provides local researchers with access to molecular biology
      software and training in the use of specialized computing
      resources.

Job Description:

    o Consult with researchers on the application of available
      computer resources to their research

    o Conduct software training classes and workshops for local researchers

    o Edit monthly newsletter

    o Evaluate new software products

    o Assist software development team in quality control

    o Prepare documentation

Minimum Qualifications:

      Education:  MS in Life Sciences or equivalent experience.

      Candidates should have 3 to 5 years experience in molecular
      biology research, preferably in gene cloning, DNA sequencing,
      or mechanisms of gene expression.  Good oral and written
      communications skills are essential.  Teaching experience and
      some experience using scientific software is desirable.
      Programming skills are NOT required.
