Position Available Systems Programmer II, Physics Department, Rutgers Univ., New Brunswick (really Piscataway) NJ The Rutgers Physics Department is looking for a full-time staff person to supervise all non-VMS systems in the Department, a network of computers currently including 8 Suns, a Ridge, and numerous Macs and PC's. Primary resposibility is to maintain the UNIX systems. In consultation with faculty, this person will plan, maintain, and upgrade operating systems, compilers, utility software, and hardware for the Unix systems in the Serin Physics Laboratory. Advises faculty on acquistions and maintenance support programs, evaluates existing software and updates used within the University and recommends and implements changes to maintain compatability and improve usefulness to the Department. Designs and documents local implementations and software. Provides advice on programming issues and system development. This position also involves being helpful in the development and use of microcomputers and of administrative software, interacting with other staff members responsible for networking and the VMS systems. Interfacing with the large staff of Sun systems people in the Computer Science Department and CCIS will be important. The position requires a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, Mathematics or similiar discipline and extensive experience with UNIX. Must be able to communicate with physicists about their needs and with other computer staff for cooperative development. Must have knowledge of networking, C and Fortran. Must be able to assume responsibility for a large system. Desirable qualifications include: experience with systems programming and maintenance on Sun workstations, Berkeley UNIX, TCP/IP and ethernet networking, IBM PC and Macintosh software, TeX and Emacs, numerical analysis, and supercomputer experience.
