Ph.D. Studentship in Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology. Place: Basel, Switzerland. Institution: Friedrich Miescher Institute. Employer: Dr. Andrew Matus, Neurobiology Group Leader. This studentship carries a stipend paid by the Institute. The successful candidate will join a group of 9 people working on the molecular basis of axon and dendrite growth in the developing brain. We are particularly interested in cellular mechanisms underlying neuronal plasticity. For further information consult the following publications: Matus, A. (1988) Ann Rev. Neurosci. 11:29-44. Garner,C. and Matus, A. (1988) J. Cell Biol. 106:779-783. Tucker, R. et al. (1988) J. Comp. Neurol. 271:44-55. There are two projects available at present. 1. Working with cloned cDNAs for microtubule-associated proteins and expressing them in mammalian cells. 2. Working with advanced video microscopy techniques to examine axon and dendrite growth in cell culture. I am interested in hearing from people who have studied neurobiology, cell biology or molecular biology as undergraduates. The Institute has a wide range of research activities in cell and molecular biology and research facilities are excellent.
