[net.micro] Dysan diskettes - too tight?

I had a problem where the disk was somehow glued (?) to the diskette liner.
I had to caaarrefulllly slice up the jacket, and caarrefulllly pull the
"cookie" out from the jacket, and insert it the same way into a scrap
diskette liner. Then it read fine. I think that the problem was caused
when the disk was shipped, and exposed to very high temperatures.

Hmmm. That sounds really wierd. I assume one of those Dysans you received
was the one I sent you. I was able to format it okay, and I have used most
of the other diskettes that were in the same box with no difficulty at all.
I don't recall checking the tightness of the media. I suppose it's remotely
possible that something happened in the mail, but I doubt it.

Is it possible that your drive isn't clamping down on the disk hub hard
enough? If true, the disk might be slipping...

Last year one of the PC-related magazines distributed a diskette
with a demo copy of MicroSoft Word bound right into the magazine.
In the instructions for using the diskette, they said to
flatten the edges of the jacket by successively holding each pair of
adjacent corners and running the edge of the jacket along the edge
of a desk. It makes sense if you stop to think about it... when
you mail a diskette to someone without a proper mailer, the edges of
the jacket get squeezed and the diskette will not turn freely. I dare
say this would happen with any brand!

I have had a similar problem with Wabash - they sound like there's sand in
the sleeve when they're rotating, and sometimes I can't close the drive
door 'cos they're so tight that they won't centre automatically.

After a fair bit of use they seem to loosen up some, but I get fed up of
having to centre the disc by hand before I use it!
