                        POSTDOCTORAL POSITION

            MOLECULAR BIOLOGY OF PLANT/PATHOGEN INTERACTIONS

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES - Opportunities exist for research in the
following areas: 1) the role of differential regulation of the drr49
multigene family in peas challenged with fungal pathogens 2) the
evolutionary conservation of gene expression in host/pathogen
interactions in wild and domestic peas 3) spatial localization of
disease resistance response gene expression in peas, using in-situ
hybridization 4) expression of pea disease resistance response genes in
transgenic Brassica napus.

QUALIFICATIONS - Qualified applicants must have or be nearing
completion of a Ph.D. in Genetics, Biochemistry, Plant Pathology, or
related field. Experience with in-situ hybridization, PCR, DNA sequencing
and cloning, and plant transformation is also desireable. Although
candidates with a strong background in recombinant DNA techniques are
preferred, those with strengths in other areas of biochemistry or in
plant/pathogen interactions will also be considered.

THE POSITION - Salary is $22,000 - $26,500 per year, depending on
experience. Funding for two years has been provided through the
Department of Plant Science and the Bank of Nova Scotia. The position
is available immediately.

THE UNIVERSITY, WINNIPEG AND MANITOBA - The University of Manitoba is
one of Canada's major centers for agricultural research. Other academic
and research institutions in Winnipeg include the Agriculture Canada
Station, the U. of M. Health Sciences campus and the University of
Winnipeg. With a cosmopolitan population of over 600,000, Winnipeg
offers a rich mixture of culture and entertainment, including the Royal
Winnipeg Ballet, and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, as well as the
NHL Jets and CFL Blue Bombers. The comparatively low cost of living,
clean air and friendly people combine to make Winnipeg a very liveable
city. Winnipeg is at the interface of the prairie and boreal forest,
and the Manitoba lake country offers great opportunities for boating,
fishing and wilderness camping.

APPLICATIONS - Send a curriculum vitae, a brief (one page) description
of your current research, and the names, addresses and phone numbers of
three referees. Applications or inquiries for further information
