Job opening: VAX Systems Manager


Position description:

Individual required to manage the operations of a VAX/VMS cluster with
a VAX 4000 and two VAXstations 2000.  The cluster is networked with
two X-windows terminals and many IBM/PCs and Macintoshes using DEC
LANworks on Ethernet; it is used primarily for DNA and protein
sequence searches and analyses, statistical data analyses, and word
processing.  Individual will oversee all operations related to the VAX
cluster and will report to the Director of Computing for Whitaker
College.  Responsibilities include systems and local network
management, systems and applications programming, software and
hardware maintenance and troubleshooting, operating system and
software installation and updates, user assistance, system performance
analyses, supervision of a Technical Assistant.  Position requires
substantial interaction with users which include faculty, research
staff and students from the College and other Institute departments.


Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.  Minimum of
three years of experience in a VAX/VMS environment; knowledge of at
least one programming language (C preferred), DECnet, TCP/IP, LAT and
X-windows protocols is required.  Experience with programming issues
related to DNA/protein sequence analyses and database searches is
highly desirable. Familiarity with PCs and Macintoshes is a plus.
