The following is the text of an advertisement to appear soon in Nature. The salaries are in pounds sterling, just in case the symbol does not survive network trans- mission. Any replys via e-mail should have my name in the subject field - we currently have only one mail box within the Museum. Richard H. Thomas Molecular Biology Unit Department of Zoology The Natural History Museum Cromwell Road London SW7 5BD ********************************************************* RESEARCH IN MOLECULAR EVOLUTION The Natural History Museum has made a major commitment to the use of molecular techniques in systematics. A new, purpose-built molecular biology laboratory complex has been opened and will be collaborating with external organisations. Applications are invited for the following positions: 1) Postdoctoral Fellowship. A three year NERC- funded position to study the evolution of mitochondrial DNA in the marine gastropod genus Littorina. This work will combine molecular systematics and population genetics in the study of speciation processes. Previous experience of molecular techniques is highly desirable. Salary is on the University Research Assistant 1A scale, starting in the range #13,166 - #15,262 (including London weighting of #1767), according to age. Position available from January, 1991. For further information please contact Dr. Richard Thomas, tel. (071) 938 9301, fax. (071) 938 8754. 2) Postdoctoral Fellowship. A three year Museum- funded position for research in molecular evolution utilizing material from the Museum's extensive collections of preserved specimens. The successful candidate will have experience of molecular techniques and be expected to develop methods for obtaining DNA sequences from preserved specimens. Salary in the range #13,893 - #18,572 (including London weighting of #1750) according to age and experience. Appointment starting from April 1, 1991. For further information please contact Dr. Richard Thomas, tel. (071) 938 9301, fax. (071) 938 8754. 3) Postdoctoral Fellowship. A three year Museum- funded position for research applying molecular techniques to protistan systematics at the higher taxonomic levels. The successful candidate will join a collaborative venture with the Polytechnic of East London already working with ciliates at the genus/family level. The post has technical support (see below). Salary in the range #16,706 - #22,218 including London weighting of #1750, according to age and experience. Appointment starting from April 1, 1991. For further information please contact Dr. David Roberts, tel. (071) 938J8790, fax. (071) 938J8754. 4) Research Assistant. A three year Museum-funded position to provide technical support for research in protistan phylogenetics. Some experience of molecular techniques is essential; the work will involve use of PCR and sequence analysis. Ph.D. registration is a possibility. Salary in the range #12,216 - #15,571 including London weighting of #1750, according to age and experience. Appointment starting from April 1, 1991. For further information please contact Dr. David Roberts, tel. (071) 938 8790, fax. (071) 938 8754. 5) Postdoctoral Fellowship. A three year NERC- funded position to carry out research on the relationship between morphological and molecular evolution under different evolutionary regimes, as deduced from groups with a good fossil record. Work will concentrate on echinoids and teleost fishes and on ribosomal RNA genes (18S and 28S) in order to determine those factors in the evolutionary history of a group that influence the molecular clock. Previous experience of molecular techniques is essential. Salary is on the University Research Assistant 1A scale, starting in the range #13,166 - #15,262 (including London weighting of #1767), according to age. Position available from January, 1991. For further information please contact Dr. Andrew B. Smith, tel. (071) 938J8925, fax. (071) 938J9277. 6) Research Assistant. A three year NERC-funded position to play a major role in a project concerned with ribosomal RNA gene sequences for elucidating the identity and relationships of digenean parasites recovered from fishes associated with the deep-sea environment. Applicants should have a good honours degree in a relevant science. Previous experience in molecular biology together with an interest in evolutionary biology of parasites would be a distinct advantage but is not essential. There will be opportunity to participate on cruises concerned with the collection of fishes from the deep-sea. Salary is on the University Research Assistant 1B scale, starting from #13,166 - #13,853 (including London weighting of #1767). Position available from January, 1991. For further information please contact Dr. David Rollinson (tel. 071 938J8887) or Dr. Rod Bray (tel. 071 938 9492), fax. (071) 938 8754. All applicants should send by December 31, 1990 a cover letter stating post(s) of interest, a full CV and the names of three referees to: Personnel Section, The Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD. The Natural History Museum is an equal opportunity employer. *********************************************************
