[net.micro] 1200 baud modems

medin@Ucb-C70@sri-unix (11/20/82)

Anyone out there have any experience with te U.S. Robotics 1200 baud modem?
It's cheaper than the hayes even with the auto-answer auto-dial option.

I know absolutely nothing about the US Robotics 1200 baud job,
but a fellow I used to work with had a USR 300 baud modem that's
about three years old. IT worked, but it was the worst piece
of commercial electronics he or I have ever seen. The packaging
was designed to let the parts come out instead of keep them in and
the internals consisted of loose parts soldered together and help
(held) in place simply because there was a spider web of
wires. Again, it did work, but the electronics were enough
to bring shudders to the strongest of men.

I am interested in purchasing a modem that supports both 1200 and 300 baud.
Autodial capability would be nice, but is not absolutely essential. The Anchor
Automation Signalman Mark VIII seems to be substantially less expensive than
the Hayes Smartmodem 1200, the US Robotics 212A, and the Novation Smart Cat
103/212. Is the Mark VIII a poorer quality modem, or does it just have fewer
bells and whistles. Any comments on the Mark VIII, especially as it compares
to the other modems listed above would be much appreciated.

I am new to this group, so forgive me if this has been done before. I could
find very little information in our backlog of net.micro articles.

I am curious about buying a 1200 baud modem, with or without acoustic coupler.
It is for a TERMINAL, so I need an RS-232C interface, not a plug-in to a
Commodore 64 or Atari 400.

Any information about price, positive experiences, or negative experiences
would be greatly appreciated.

Please mail your responses; I will post a summary if the demand is there.

Does anyone know if Anchor has added the <BREAK> function to their Signalman
Mark XII?

Thanks,
