I received a message from a reader this afternoon mentioning the lack of faculty position postings on the employment newsgroup (EMPLOYMENT/BIOJOBS/bionet.jobs). There is no doubt that the vast majority of positions advertised have been postdoc and lower level appointments. I wonder to what extent this may be due to lack of awareness of this forum on the part of various department heads. Certainly the price of posting an ad can't be an obstacle 8-)!! Perhaps our readers could alert their respective department chairmen about the availability of this forum as an attempt to get more faculty positions advertised. I am also ever hopeful that Internet regulations will be modified to allow the posting of commercial job opportunities, but, to my current knowledge this obstacle still remains. Some day, perhaps after the end of the current GenBank contract, I hope to be able to do more direct contacts and proselytizing on behalf of the newsgroups, but there are limits on the amount of time I can devote to this right now.
