[bionet.jobs] Molecular Biology DB Programmer/Boston

cherry@frodo.mgh.harvard.edu (Mike Cherry) (03/05/91)

The Department of Molecular Biology at Massachusetts General Hospital is
looking for a new member of our computing resource group. This new
position will primarily involve development and support of a relational
database and associated applications for maintaining the large amount of
physical and genetic data associated with our Arabidopsis genome
efforts. Some support for the general user community will be required.

Members of Dr. Howard Goodman's laboratory have been mapping cosmid
clones into clusters or contigs. Currently there are approximately 700
contigs representing 90-95% of the Arabidopsis genome. The current RFLP
map for Arabidopsis contains about 300 mapped markers. Very soon a new
sequencing facility will be finished and Multiplex sequencing, a la Dr.
George Church, will begin on interesting regions of the Arabidopsis
genome.

The Departmental computing environment includes several VAX/VMS systems
including two new VAXStation 3100 model 76 SPX machines which are rated
at 10 MIPS each. We also have Sun Microsystems and Evan & Sutherland
computers. Basic laboratory user computing needs are supplied by 30
Macintosh computers. All of our computers are on the Internet.
Massachusetts General Hospital is the largest research hospital in the
United States.

Massachusetts General Hospital is located in Boston just across the
Charles River from MIT.

We wish to encourage molecular biologist with experience with
programming and specifically interested in relational databases to send
your c.v. The ideal candidate would have an understanding of current
molecular biology and be capable of undertaking independent programming
projects. For candidates with a Ph.D. in molecular biology a post
doctoral fellowship would be considered. A willingness to learn and
patience to work with non-computer oriented molecular biologist are also
desirable.

This position is available immediately. MGH is an equal opportunity
employer.
