POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT Head of Information Management Unit CIAT is an international agricultural research center whose aim is to generate technology that will lead to lasting increases in agricultural production while preserving the natural resource base. CIAT's area of responsibility is the tropical world with special regional emphasis on Latin America. CIAT headquarters are based in Cali Colombia with major research stations in various agroecosystems within that country. Agricultural scientists are also outposted in many tropical countries. Research activities are developed through eight programs in the areas of Germplasm Development, and Resource Management. Job Description The Information Management Unit (IMU) is responsible for the design, building and monitoring of information systems including IBM mainframe and microcomputer networks for management, research and internal and external communications. These resources are deployed in a decentralized fashion, built around interacting data domains in the fields of research (germplasm enhancement, soil plant relationships, socio-economics and geographic information systems), of management issues (partner institutions, research projects, finance and administration) and bibliographic material. The IMU assists teams within the data domains in developing and using systems that support their unique information needs. It oversees center- wide standards for database design and information flow. It also provides hardware and software support for the various elements of the system. The successful candidate will lead a team of analysts responsible for the integration of information processing and data flow based at the CIAT headquarters. He/she reports to the Deputy Director General, and will act as Executive Secretary of a center-wide Information Management Committee. Requirements This is a senior position for a creative and forward-thinking professional who has proven capacity to work with teams of scientists, administrative and information specialists. The successful applicant must have at least 5 years proven experience in the planning and administration of information management systems, preferably in a research environment. Experience in the technical implementation of hardware and software for distributed relational databases, design and implementation of networks and tele- communication systems, geographic information systems, bibliographic systems and office automation is required. Knowledge of IBM mainframe systems would be an advantage. An advanced degree in either computer sciences, system engineering or related area is required. Some experience with biological research methods is desirable. Excellent command of English is necessary and a working knowledge of Spanish would be an advantage.
