[bionet.molbio.genbank] translated databases?

VCORCES.BISHOP@BIONET-20.BIO.NET (John Bishop) (01/08/89)

Dear Genbank-bb,
Seems that people are in need of the translated database searching
capability mentioned here in this bb by James Fickett and others a while back.
Also seems Henikoff and Wallace have hit on a good AT class computer version
of such searches (Nuc Acids Res 16(13):6191). I have heard that people
are sending their stuff to Genentech to be done in such a fashion. $$$$?
Are these plans being implemented? or should I get on the phone to Steve
Henikoff now?

We hope to have software running on BIONET around the middle of this
year to perform the type of database search that you mentioned.

Bill Pearson, for reasons of modesty, did not give sufficient praise to
the FASTA suite of programs (including TFASTA). These comparison programs
are easy to use, flexible in application, make very few "assumptions" about
the sequences to be compared, have unparalleled support (Bill is just an e-mail
away and usually answers within a day), and are amazingly fast. We have tried
most of the search programs and have never found any with the overall power
and speed of the FASTA series.
