From: Drew Anderson <DDA@CMU-CS-C.ARPA> I just received my Olivetti 2300 printer in the mail today. I ordered it from DAK about 2 weeks ago. I set it up and did the provided system test. The printer is very quiet and reasonably fast. Print quality is NOT what they show in the DAK catalog. It is a little coarse and looks brown and sort of burnt. This is probably due to the fact that the ink is attached to the ppapper by a small arc. It is rather interesting to watch the sparks fly when the thing is pprinting! I have not connected it to my computer yet, so I cannot say how fast it really is. It is rated at 50 real (full) lines per minute. This is interesting because it makes seven passes per line (1 per pixel row.) The ink module is very easy to replace, it just pops in. There is a sensor that detects the ink-out condition. Except for the possibility that the modules will be scarce, it is a neat mechanism. I ordered several extra modules, but they were *BACK ORDERED*. The printer is Z80 based, and the manual is pretty good on interfacing requirements (better than a lot that I have seen.) The nicest thing about it is that it is very quiet. It could easily be used in an office environment. If ppeople are interested, I will post more info after I have had time to play with it. Drew Anderson DDA@cmu-cs-c.arpa -------
