[bionet.molbio.genbank] Depositing sequence info with the major databases

eddy@boulder.Colorado.EDU (Sean Eddy) (11/22/90)

A thousand pardons; I know this must surely be the most
frequently asked question here.

I've got a DNA sequence and the deduced protein sequence
of a new gene. I'm about to submit a paper on it. I'd like
to deposit the sequence with GenBank and with the NBRF
protein database.

What's the best way to do this, and can I do it via
Internet instead of regular mail?

Thanks much,
Sean Eddy

GenBank would prefer for you to submit your sequence using the
AuthorIn program. A free copy (for either the IBM PC or Macintosh)
can be obtained by sending your regular mailing address to
authorin@genbank.bio.net. AuthorIn prepares your submission for rapid
inclusion into the GenBank relational database and ensures that the
data conforms to standard conventions.

You can also submit by electronic mail. The address for GenBank
submissions is gb-sub%life@lanl.gov. The address for PIR submissions
is pirsub@gunbrf.bitnet. I will send along a copy of the submission
form in a follow-up message. Note that the submission form can be
retrieved by sending a message containing the one word DATASUB in a
message to retrieve@genbank.bio.net. The submission form is filled
out using a text editor which obviously does not do error checking or
standardize output, so we would encourage you to use AuthorIn to
ensure the maximum integrity and rapid entry of your data into the
database.
