I do not wish to give a blow by blow account of all the statistics you
quoted about EMBL/GenBank productivity, but just a few points:
 - the data available from the EMBL file server is not just new data
   entered at EMBL, but also that sent from GenBank and DDBJ which also
   enters the EMBL RDBMS. We do not distinguish between these sources, so
   you cannot use the NEWENTRIES.NDX index as I think you have.
 - the index contains updates to existing entries as well as entirely new
   ones. Numbers of updates performed in a given period can fluctuate
   wildly, even more so those that get reflected in the index itself.
