A new release of the fasta searching package - version 1.5 - has been available for downloading from the uvaarpa.virginia.EDU anonymous ftp host for several months. Yesterday a subtle bug in the software was reported that caused the program to core dump on rare occasions. I do not believe that the bug would have caused high-scoring sequences to be missed. This bug has been fixed, and version 1.5 users are encouraged to get the current version (1.5a) from uvaarpa.virginia.EDU. If you do not have internet access, I can send copies via electronic mail. Fasta1.4 does not have this bug (or any others that I know of). Version 1.5 offers several additional options for searching and for more flexible library handling. Version 1.4 is more mature, having been available with only minor modifications (to keep up with increasing library sizes) for almost two years. Bill Pearson
