kristoff@GENBANK.BIO.NET (Dave Kristofferson) (01/16/91)
A new version of the Drosophila Redbook is available for ftp from genbank.bio.net in pub/db/redbook. A copy of the README file follows. *** PLEASE NOTE *** that we are under restrictions from Academic Press regarding this databank. Individuals are allowed to retrieve copies for their own use, but those who wish to put copies up for redistribution at other ftp sites or mail servers must first contact Academic Press for permission as described below. My thanks to Professor Douglas Brutlag at Stanford for his efforts in arranging for the availability of this databank on the GenBank On-line Service. Sincerely, Dave Kristofferson GenBank Manager kristoff@genbank.bio.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The Genome of Drosophila melanogaster by Dan Lindsley and Georgina Zimm Academic Press Through the generosity of the authors Drs. Dan Lindsley and Georgina Zimm and the publishers, Academic Press, we are making a prerelease of the text of the book "The Genome of Drosophila melanogaster" available for anonymous FTP on GenBank. This is an updated and greatly expanded version of the classical Redbook of Drosophila genetics entitled "Genetic Variations of Drosophila melanogaster by Lindsley and Grell". Much of this text has also appeared earlier in DIS. (This prerelease contains up-to-date information on all loci beginning with the letters A-R and updated material on loci from S-Z. The final version of the text will be released when the book goes to press.) These files have been made available only for downloading from GenBank and NOT for redistribution to other sites. Those wishing to distribute these files must contact Phyllis B. Moses (Academic Press, New York, 212 614-3155) for written permission. The book is divided into 40 files which are arranged alphabetically according to locus. They are located on /gos/public/pub/db/redbook and take up 4.2 megabytes. Since much of the "Genome of Drosophila melanogaster" is free text, these files can be most readily accessed by using text search and indexing methods such as grep or IRX on a Unix workstation, On Location or Gopher on a Macintosh or ZYIndex on an IBM PS/2. If these is sufficient interest GenBank can also make the "Genome of Drosophila melanogaster" available as an IRX database on the GenBank computer. Please send a message to brutlag@genbank.bio.net if you would be interested in having the "Genome of Drosophila melanogaster" available on GenBank as an IRX indexed database. -------
