Execuse us for this novice question. We are researching in information retreival for genomic information at Kyushu Univ. Japan. And we would like to know whether we can use "*.idx" files in the GenBank distribution tape for reconstructing longer genome sequences from the original GenBank sequences. We would like to use these idx files efficiently. But we don't know much about them.(For example, gbhgm.idx file has the list for AACT gene. Then were the loci of the AACT gene list selected only by matching the "AACT" characters in LOCUS names? Are there any possibility that some AACT loci are left unselected in the GenBank?) We have heard that idx files are probably genome data base, originaly developed in Jone's Hopkin's University and now maintained in NIH. But we are not sure. Could anyone let us know the encoding algorithm of idx files, or any public software (preferably with source codes) to make them? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.
