		  The Matrix of Biological Knowledge

			    Reorganization

At the Executive Committee meeting in October 1988 it was decided to
change the organization of the Bio-Matrix effort. In order to provide
for a hardcopy newletter and support minimal organizational functions
such as a mailing list and long-distance phone charges, we decided to
institute an annual membership fee. The rates are $25.00 for full
membership and $10.00 for students. This money will also be used to
start work on the Matrix Primer (see following postings).
The address appears at the end of this message. The Santa Fe
Institute has generously consented to handle the administration
of the funds received.

The frequency with which the Newletter appears will be directly
related to the degree to which you participate in the Bio-Matrix
bulletin board.

If any of the international readers of this list wish to join (we
certainly don't mean to exclude you!) please contact dd@lanl.gov
(Internet), dd%lanl.gov@CUNYVM (bitnet) or by snail mail Dr. Dan
Davison, T-10 MS K710, Theoretical Biology, Los Alamos National
Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM 87545 USA (*).

The BIO-MATRIX bulletin board in its current forms on all networks
will continue unchanged. A recent request for conformation of receipt
from the revised bulletin board mailer (a change which should be
transparent to almost everyone) resulted in two messages from networks
that I did not previously know were receiving the Matrix information.
There are now approximately 100 direct subscribers to the list, with
many, many additional readers on the connected networks. It would not
be a surprise if there were more than 1500 regular readers.

The checks or money orders, in US funds, should be made payable to
"The Santa Fe Institute--Bio-Matrix Project". The entire amount is
tax-deductable under US law. The address is:

Requests to be added to the direct-distribution mailing list should be
sent to BIO-MATRIX-REQUEST@BIONET-20.BIO.NET. (BITNET:

Submissions for the list are always encouraged, and should be sent to
