Lois Blaine (of the ATCC), Chairman of the CODATA Commission on the Terminology and Nomenclature of Biology, recently sent around "an invitation to the Bio-Unions [such as the Matrix] to nominate one or more of their constituents as members to the Commission .... The first Commission meeting is planned for fall of 1989, so please submit your nominations as soon as possible". Has the Matrix executive committee acted on this request ? If possible, I'd like to attend as one of the Matrix representatives since I've been engaged in a "campaign" to get the Nomenclature Committee of the International Union of Biochemistry to allow their book "Enzyme Nomenclature" (the official catalogue of enzyme names, functions, & "EC" numbers) to be reformatted as an on-line relational database. Such a database would provide a standard nomenclature that could be used to cross-index a number of the current biological databases, e.g. the DNA and protein sequence DB's and the Brookhaven protein structure DB.
