--------------------------------------------------------------------------- National Center for Biotechnology Information Software Toolbox Forum --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message is to announce the creation of a new mailing list devoted to the development of Biotechnology Information Toolkit Software (BITS). All of you have heard of this project and should have received the first proposal from me directly. There have been a variety of responses, mostly oral at this point. We have since evolved our ideas considerably. I have also received a thoughtful reply from Thomas Shalom at Baylor which will be forewarded to everyone once I know this bulletin board is working. I will also send comments about our own evolution, a number of which are similar to Tom's comments. Please let me know if you got this by sending a reply to bits-request (see below), or if you want your name taken off the list. Feel free to pass along the address to anyone who is interested and have them send their email address to be added. Lots is going on here, so I will also use this to try to keep you all posted about other things of interest at NCBI. Steve Satterfield will be handling the bulletin board for us. I look foreward to interesting discussion here. Jim Ostell ostell@bio.nlm.nih.gov ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The addresses associated with the list are: bits@bio.nlm.nih.gov (submissions for automatic distribution) bits-request@bio.nlm.nih.gov (additions/deletions/admin stuff) Please address messages which you intend for automatic distribution to the full list to bits@bio.nlm.nih.gov. Address *all* requests for additions, deletions, administrative questions, or anything intended specifically for us to bits-request@bio.nlm.nih.gov. This second address will prevent everyone from seeing your request and wasting their time. As stated above, the list is unmoderated. This means that any message you address to bits@nlm.nih.gov will be automatically distributed to everyone on the list. This method of operation could change in the future depending upon the success of the list and our to serve as moderator. We will be keeping archives of the message, and will make them available for anonymous FTP. We hope that this list can be useful for all concerned. Steven G.
