Watching the interesting discussion over Junk DNA, it reminds me that as late as 1940 neurophysiologists, neuroanatomists, physiological psychologists, and neurologists seriously believed that the 'function' of the corpus callosum (a major band of nerve fibres connecting the tops of both sides of our cerebral hemispheres) was purely mechanical; that is, it functioned only to keep the two halves from sagging.
