The EMBL Network File Server : File Name Changes
------------------------------------------------

The names of certain index and documentation files available via the
EMBL File Server have been changed in line with the changes to the latest
magnetic tape release (16.0).

Users wishing to access the EMBL File Server this week beginning 22.8.88
may experience a day or two's delay in getting a response : the VAXCluster
at EMBL is having a VMS-upgrade.

The following files are now available in the DataLib directory:

o Every entry in the current release of the EMBL Nucleotide Sequence
database, and any new entry created after that release was built.
Each entry is stored in a separate file; the filename is the same as
       the entryname.

o The following indices built from both current and new entries:

       Indices Built Indices Built
       from latest from entries new
       Release since latest release
                         (updated daily)
       -------------- ---------------------

       SPECIES.NDX NEWSPECIES.NDX - Species index
       AUTHOR.NDX NEWAUTHOR.NDX - Author index
       KEYWORD.NDX NEWKEYWORD.NDX - Keyword index
       SHORTDIR.NDX NEWSHORTDIR.NDX - Short directory index
        (v. large)
       CITATION.NDX NEWCITATION.NDX - Citation index
       ACNUMBER.NDX NEWACNUMBER.NDX - Accession number index

o The EMBL Nucleotide Sequence Data Library user manual (USRMAN.DOC)
which describes the format and conventions used in the Data Library.

o The Sequence Data Submission Form (DATASUB.TXT), which
can be used to submit a nucleotide and/or amino acid sequence.

o Documentation on the NAR data submission scheme (NARINFO.DOC).

An example:

A scientist reads about a sequence in a recent journal and wants to know if
it exists yet as an entry in the EMBL database. They decide to obtain the
citation index that includes only entries added to the database since the
latest full release, by sending the following command to the fileserver,
by standard electronic mail to the BITNET/EARN address NETSERV@EMBL.BITNET

     Get DataLib:NEWCITATION.NDX

They look up the reference, find that there is an entry called PIP03XX, and
obtain a copy of it by sending the following command to the file server:

     Get DataLib:PIP03XX
