[net.micro] Dual UART response

john@hp-pcd.UUCP (06/11/84)

I have a Rockwell 1984 Data book that shows the R65C52 Dual Uart. It has
two seperate Uarts with modem control lines and on chip baud rate generator.
It is also in CMOS in a 40 pin package.

In re: Mike Blackwell's (MKB@CMU-CS-S.ARPA) request for dual UARTs,
I don't know of any absolutely plain vanilla dual UARTs in 40-pin
packages, but ZILOG puts out a chip called a DART, for use with the
Z80, that does the required function. The DART is really just a
screen-failed Z80-SIO that wouldn't run synchronous, and it IS a
relatively cheap chip.

Hope this is helpful.

Signmetics makes a DUAL UART in a 40 pin (also 28 and 24 pin packages)
called the 2681. A MC68000 bus interface version is called the 68681.
They work very nicely, have on chip baud rate generator, 3 char incoming
buffer. The smaller packages leave out most modem control pins, you
basically just get transmit and receive for both channels.
The 68681 is also available from Motorola.

Signetics 2681 DUART is very nice, comes in 40, 28, and 24 pins.
Internal Baud Rate generator, 3.6864 MHz external crystal.
Recive character is quad-buffered.
Spare Counter/Timer.
Have been using it for about six months.
Very Nice, about $12.
