[net.micro] Want recommendation on micros

<Is the line eater still live?>

O great and mighty Usenetters, I come humbly to ask for advice.

My parents have asked me to select a home computer for them. My
family has access to a VAX, and I know computers in general, but
I'm unfamilier with a lot of microcomputers. Since the VAX is available,
we don't need anything with massive amounts of processing power.
We plan to use the system almost exclusively for word processing.
The overriding requirement is "most bang for the buck;" my parents
want to spend under $3000 for EVERYTHING (including a letter-quality
printer, software, modem, etc.). We don't need graphics, color, games,
etc. Currently, I'm thinking of the Kaypro, Apple IIe/c, and the
Macintosh (sp?). Ease of use is NOT a concern.

So....
What do you people think I should consider for:
	a)The machine
b)The printer (must be able to generate letter quality text.
Dot-matrix is O.K. only if you can't tell that it's
		dot-matrix. Graphics don't matter.)
	c)A modem
	d)Software (word-processing, telecommunication, etc.)
Any information, experience, ideas, etc. are welcome. I need leads.
Once I get a good list, I can raid the computer stores and narrow things
down.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I will be gone for a week. Mail (or post if of general interest)
replies. I will summarize is there's enough interest. Thank you.
