Is ir true that harpo won't forward mail to non-Bell Labs sites? I have had problems getting through harpo, and I seem to remember hearing about this. If so, who is it that so much news goes through there? Whenever I reply to an article, I don't want to have to make sure that the places I'm going through are friendly. Wayne

If you have problems related to harpo send me evidence and I will fix the problem if I can. PS - I've been polling ucbvax daily since 1979 'cause I'm mean!

I remember seeing a note which said that harpo was having problems, and then was fixed. Yet I was not not able to send mail through it since I saw the "fixed" note. I posted a note asking about harpo about 4 months ago. The recent problems were something different, but one old problem remains: there are several connections (and to be fair, harpo isn't the only one guilty of this) that appear to be news-only, i.e. they will pass news but reject private mail. This seems to be most prevalent within Bell Labs and <FLAME ON> It makes it a real pain in the *&%$#"@*! to get mail to someone because it is impossible to figure out what path I should use except by trial and error! Is it really necessary to have news-only connections? Why is this done? Surely the volume of news is much greater than the volume of mail, so I don't buy the "too loaded" arguments. I would like to hear from someone who knows from the inside about this (Brian Redman?) why this "chaotic" state is considered necessary. This makes the "r" command in readnews virtually useless. <FLAME OFF> And while I'm on the subject, does anyone know of a *reliable*, TWO-WAY path for mail from where I am (or from decvax or ucbvax) to allegra? How about ihuxn? I have always had difficulty corresponding with people at these sites and in general I can never be sure if my letters are getting there. #R:ucbvax:-20400:inmet:7000005:000:1423 inmet!nrh Apr 10 12:58:00 1983 Oh humbug! Harpo works fine! We send mail through there all the time. At one point, they had some problems (50 users + lots of netnews traffic I'm told) that brought harpo to its knees for a while, but that was MONTHS ago. I think what's happened is that the "bermuda triangle" syndrome has set in: a couple of people lose stuff there, and then tell others that, and then, no matter how good harpo is at relaying stuff, we have "the harpo barrier" and netnews items from people who say: "Sorry, but I'd have to send mail through harpo, so instead I'm sending news". Well, how about a little empiricism here? TRY sending something through harpo, and if it doesn't work, you might check with the OTHER sites in the path, rather than assuming it is harpo that's choking you. Try bouncing mail off of harpo: Mail xx!yy!harpo!yy!xx!mysite!me I guess harpo works after all.... EOF and if that fails, DON'T give up, try: Mail xx!yy!xx!mysite!me I guess yy works, but if I don't get this then YY or XX, not HARPO is the problem. EOF Of course, lots of sites have path optimizers that will do funny things to your circular pathname, and at least one objects to their use. Out of courtesy (or perhaps mercy), please WAIT some random amount of time after seeing this so that harpo will not be flooded with mail from well-meaning testers. flames and replies to (heh heh) harpo!inmet!nrh Nat Howard

I understand that a flight of F4D's were lost in harpo in 1945. Can anyone confirm this? Larry Dwyer twilight!zone!ld
