[comp.lang.scheme] MIT Scheme 7.1

cph@altdorf.ai.mit.EDU (Chris Hanson) (01/09/91)

MIT Scheme release 7.1 is now available for beta test.

These are the highlights of the release:

* New arithmetic is fully compatible with R4RS and the IEEE Scheme
  Standard.

* Revised and updated "Reference Manual".

* New "User's Manual" documents how to start and stop Scheme, how to
use interrupt characters, how to run Scheme under GNU Emacs, how to
  run Edwin.

* New command-line options and environment variables; see the "User's
  Manual" for details.

* Most machines now provide 26-bit addresses; the last release
  provided only 24 bits.

* Edwin now uses termcap instead of curses, has greatly improved
performance, is more like GNU Emacs, and supports multiple X
  windows.

This release is compliant with the (not-quite-published) IEEE Scheme
Standard, with one exception: #f and the empty list are the same
object. This will be fixed in the near future to make MIT Scheme
fully compliant.

The release is immediately available for the following systems:

    HP 9000 series 300/400/800 running HP-UX 7.0
    DECStation 3100/5100 running Ultrix 4.0
    Sun 3/4 running SunOS 4.1

In addition, we will have the following in a few days:

    NeXT running NeXT OS 2.0

This release may be obtained by anonymous ftp from
"altdorf.ai.mit.edu" (internet address 18.43.0.246), from the
directory "pub/scheme-7.1/". See the README file in that directory
for further directions.

We will not be mailing tapes of this release until the beta test has
finished and the full release is out; however if you show up at MIT
with a 9-track magtape we'll be happy to put the software on it.

As usual, report bugs to

    bug-cscheme@zurich.ai.mit.edu

Has anybody managed to build a full set of *.psb files on a Sun-4, yet?
I tried (with the runtime library supplied at altdorf.ai.mit.edu), but
sf did not like some of the input files. Specifically, it had problems
with global.scm, lambda.scm, prgcop.scm and scode.scm. What am I doing
wrong?

			thanx in advance,
				mike
