[comp.lang.scheme] Thanks for help locating manual

lynn@phx.mcd.mot.com (Lynn D Newton) (02/27/91)

Thanks to the Schemers who responded to my plea for help locating
a manual. I still don't have a copy of the Abelson/Sosman in
hand, but almost.

Since this book seems to be the source text on the subject,
perhaps readers of this group should be aware of the difficulty I
had with the publisher, McGraw-Hill. They do have the book
available, and were ready to send it to me, whereupon they
noticed that the book is on some kind of a restricted list,
marked to be available through book clubs only.

I said that this was a book used in Universities all across the
country by students who are certainly not book club members. (Or
so I am given to understand.) I had called several University
book stores so far and none were able to help me out. One
(University of Minnesota) had a copy, and were ready to ship, but
they didn't take a credit card, only check in advance. I needed
it last Friday. So just how was I supposed to get ahold of a copy
of the book. The lady I talked to suggested that I would have to
join a book club. I said I wouldn't join a book club because I
was buying this book through the company I work for (Motorola).
They refused to sell me the book.

I wonder if Prof.'s Abelson and Sosman are aware of this?
