[net.news.group] Regional subnets

mjl (03/25/83)

While I agree with Mark Horton's basic idea (regional and global newsgroups),
I think net.all should be equivalent to his world.all. New classes should be
established for restricted geographical areas (e.g., eur.all, usa.all,
na.all). For one thing, this would make it unnecessary to create a huge
number of new subgroups to transmit generally desired information (net.micros,
net.lang, whatever) all over the world. Second, the new regional newsgroups
would not have a lot of vestigial subgroups.

All in all, regional subnets are a good idea; I don't see why they can't be
installed with (relative) ease.

It seems to me with all the discussion of regional and global newsgroups,
there must be some already in existence already that may have a better chance
of fulfilling their purpose if their existence was known.
What I'm asking is, what local/not-netwide newsgroups are there?
I have seen some (mythological?) references to ne.all (New England?) but
have had little luck trying to establish contact with other subscribers.
I imagine the 2 RI sites on USENET could set up a ri.all distribution,
but we're in communication with brunix anyway (too limited for the bother).
Maybe if sites involved in sub-global (non-organizational) groups
posted their existence and range, the idea might catch on better....

Let me give you an example of regional newsgroups: We here in Western New
York State have a group called wny.*. It constain such sub-groups as
wny.seminar, wny.events, and wny.yumyum (restaurant reviews). All of these
things are of purely local character.

As to other regional groups, I know of ny, ont(ario), & nj.

Here in northern California, we have ba.all, which stands for Bay Area.
We are happy to forward ba.all to anyone.

. . . And now to announce ne.all, for New England sites!

As well as ont.all for Ontario, we have can.all across Canada.
