[comp.sys.sgi] vt100 emulator badly needed...

KEMBIOS@DKARH02.BITNET (01/13/88)

[If you've seen this before, I apologize. I've posted parts of it
before, but I haven't seen it appear on the net, and I haven't
seen any replies.]

Unfortunately, Silicon Graphics has chosen the out-dated vt52 emulation
for the Iris keyboard (at least on the 3020 and 2400) -- and it doesn't
even work properly. When I telnet to our local microVAX, and invoke EDT
the forward scrolling is not working. Only the last line is 'scrolling'.
Of course you can do a ^w screen refresh once in a while, but it becomes
a nuissance in the long run :-{.

Sooo, until SGI comes up with a decent ANSI keyboard driver routine
(SGI, are you there?? Is it happening??) we are in *desperate* need of a
vt100/vt200 emulation program. Something that would enable one to run a VAX
session in a separate window.

The vt52 emulation scheme is a *disaster* when running gnu emacs, since
the arrow keys don't have the usual meaning (cursor movement...). It isn't
possible to change this without changing some of the standard gnu emacs
key bindings (M-A, M-B, etc).

Talking of terminal emulation, there seems to be the problem with
mex, that it doesn't keep track of the size of your textports. This
means that vi and emacs *has* to run in a full sized window.
Are there any fixes for this on the way??

Last, but not least: the world seems to be going X-windows. This is at
least true for the European Macromolecular Crystallographers, who is
currently deciding on X (and PHIGS) as the future standard for software
(molecular graphics) development. Does anyone know of a fullblown
IRIS mouse-driven X implementation, with the option of doing 3D graphics??
